The heart is deceitful above all things, the prophet Jeremiah reminds us (17:9). Absorbed in our own interests as we are, it is difficult to know its motives and workings. Accordingly, our self-interest is not always in our best interest. You’ve surely noticed how others so easily deceive themselves. Don’t think you aren’t capable of the same self-manipulation. Don’t think you aren’t capable of believing your own lies. That which glitters today will not be as valuable tomorrow. Put your heart in the hands of our Maker and ask him to refashion it, its desires, its longings, and its thoughts. The long-term gains will far outshine any immediate frustrations.
